Square takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and Cash App Pay and Afterpay where your account offers them, on its own page. You need a Square account activated for payments (squareup.com/activation).

In Square

  1. Open the Square Developer Console, signed in with your Square account. If it lists no application, create one: any name will do.
  2. Open the application, and in the left pane open Credentials.
  3. At the top, choose Production. In the Production Access token box, press Show and copy the token.
  4. Optional: to take the money at a location other than your main one, open Locations in the same left pane and copy that location’s ID.

The webhook (optional)

With it, payments are confirmed sooner and refunds you make in Square reach your orders. Without it, Shoply still follows each payment, a little later.
  1. Open Shoply’s Square dialog and copy the Callback URL it shows over Webhook Signature Key.
  2. In your application in the Developer Console, open Webhooks, then Subscriptions, and press Add subscription.
  3. Name it, paste the Callback URL as its notification URL, choose the events payment.created and payment.updated, and press Save.
  4. In Endpoint Details, press Show in the Signature Key box and copy it.
A Sandbox token, on the same Credentials page, completes and delivers orders with no money moving.

In Shoply

  1. In your Shoply dashboard, open Settings, then Payment Methods.
  2. Under Add a Payment Method, find Square and press Connect.
  3. Paste the token into Access Token, and the location’s ID into Location ID if you copied one.
  4. If you made the webhook, paste its key into Webhook Signature Key.
  5. Press Test Connection to try what you pasted, then Connect App.
Saving refuses a location that is not active, or that cannot take card payments yet. Test Connection says whether the token is a sandbox one, and which currency the location charges in. If you sell subscriptions, Square’s page takes cards only for a subscription’s first payment. Once it is paid, Shoply makes a customer for the buyer in your Square account and saves the card on file for them, and each renewal is charged to that card on its day, with nobody there. Square asks that a buyer agree before their card is saved: the checkout tells them, before they pay, that their card is charged for each renewal. How Square works once it is connected, at the checkout and on an order, is in Payment methods.
