Your store is built to be read by search engines without anything from you. Every page has a title and a description of its own, what is on a page is in the page for a search engine that runs no script, and the store keeps a sitemap. The Search Visibility group of the dashboard is where you change what it says. For articles written to be found, see the blog.

A page’s own title and description

A product and a category each have In Search Results: a title and a description for search engines alone. Left empty, the name and the description are used. A product’s is on its General tab, a category’s is in its dialog.

Sitemap

Sitemap lists every address your store hands to search engines, in four kinds: pages, categories, products and blog. The file itself is at /sitemap.xml on your store. For a whole kind, or for one address, you can set: An address you leave alone follows its kind. Each change is saved as you make it. Google reads the date a page last changed and has said it ignores priority and how often. Other search engines may read them.

Redirects

When a page goes, a product is renamed or a link was mistyped somewhere, a redirect sends its old address to a page that is there.
  • Both ends are addresses on your store, such as /old-page or /product/?name=old-name. A whole address copied from your browser works too.
  • A redirect is only followed once its address really has nothing at it. One made for an address that still has a page waits, and says so.
  • A redirect never leads to another redirect. Add one for a place older ones lead to, and they are moved along with it.
Broken Links, on the same page, lists the addresses people asked your store for that had nothing at them, the most recent 200. Add a redirect for one and it leaves the list. What programs ask every site for while looking for other software (/phpinfo, /.env, /wp-admin) is left out: nobody meant your store by it, and there is nothing to mend.

Search analytics

Search Analytics shows how your store does in search: how often it was shown, how often it was pressed, the click rate and its average position, over time and by what people searched. Pick one search or one page to see its figures alone. It reads them from an account of yours. Connecting Google Search Console is not available yet.

With the API

Search settings, the sitemap and redirects and broken links can all be read and changed from your own server.
