# Win-Back and subscribers

> Ask buyers at checkout whether you may email them, and write to the ones who have not ordered in a while

Both are under **Marketing**, then **Email Marketing**: **Win-Back** and **Subscribers** are its tabs, beside [Cart Recovery](/guides/cart-recovery.md).

## Asking at checkout

A buyer is only ever written to about your store's news and offers after saying yes. With **Ask at Checkout** on (its card at the top of the **Subscribers** tab), the checkout shows a box above **Pay**: "Email me news and offers from" and your store's name. It starts unticked. On a store with terms, it stands over the terms tick.

* It is asked on your store's checkout, in an [embed](/guides/embeds.md) and in the [Checkout Kit](/guides/checkout-kit.md), where its class is `.shoply-kit-consent`. Never on an invoice or a payment link you sent.
* It is asked once, as the buyer first presses **Pay**. A buyer who ticks it has a line on the order's timeline saying so, with its time.
* The buyer becomes a subscriber once that order is paid. A box ticked on an order nobody paid subscribes nobody.

Switching **Win-Back** on switches **Ask at Checkout** on too, since nobody new could be written to otherwise. You can switch it off again yourself.

## Subscribers

The **Subscribers** tab is everybody who ticked the box, newest first: their address, when they said yes, where (your store, an embed or the Checkout Kit) and on which order, and whether they still want your emails. Search by address, and **Show** narrows it to **Subscribed** or **Unsubscribed**.

| | |
| - | - |
| **Subscribed** | Buyers who want your emails now, and how many said yes in the last 30 days. |
| **Said Yes** | Of the paid orders that showed the box in the last 30 days, the share whose buyer ticked it. |
| **Unsubscribed** | Buyers who said no in the last 30 days. |
| **Emails Sent** | Cart Recovery and Win-Back emails sent in the last 30 days. |

**Unsubscribe** in a row's menu takes a buyer off. Only ticking the box again, on an order they pay, puts them back. **Export CSV** makes a spreadsheet of the list as it is shown.

**One no is a no to both.** A buyer who unsubscribes from a Win-Back email, from a [Cart Recovery](/guides/cart-recovery.md) email, or whom you take off, gets neither kind from your store again. Receipts and every other email about an order still go. A buyer who later ticks the box again on an order they pay gets both again.

## Win-Back

Win-Back writes to subscribers who have not ordered in a while. **Turn On Win-Back** switches it on, and the card at the head of the tab says what it does and switches it off again.

| | |
| - | - |
| **First Email** | 30 days after their last order: a short note, as Cart Recovery's first is, with when they last ordered and a **Shop Again** link. |
| **Second Email** | 14 days after the first: 15% off their next order in a coupon made for them, with **Shop Now**. |

They are sent in your store's name, with no social icons under them, from a mailbox of their own, as [Cart Recovery's](/guides/cart-recovery.md) are, and not the one receipts come from.

Each has its switch and an edit button. **Edit** sets when it goes (the first 14 to 90 days after the last order, the second 3 to 30 days after the first) and, for the second, its coupon: none, or 5% to 25% off. Its subject and its words are in [Email Templates](/guides/email-templates.md). Without a coupon the second email says "We'd love to see you again". With the first switched off, a buyer gets the second only, as many days after their last order as the two together.

The coupon is made for each buyer, good for 7 days and one use, and filed in the **Win-Back** category of your coupons, which you cannot rename and which does not count toward your store's coupons. The buyer types it at checkout. The emails' button leads to your store's home page.

### Who is written to

A buyer is written to about their last paid order at your store, where:

* they are subscribed;
* no order of theirs was ever disputed;
* they are among **Who Gets Them**: everyone subscribed, or only the customers wearing one [tag](/guides/customers-and-balance.md#tags), such as VIP.

At most two emails each time a buyer goes quiet, and none once they order again. Before each email the buyer is looked at again, and nothing is sent once they have ordered, unsubscribed, disputed an order or left the tag you chose, or once you switch Win-Back off. Switching it on does not write to everybody whose last order was long ago: a buyer whose first email fell due more than 14 days before is passed over.

One address gets at most three Win-Back emails a day from every store on Shoply together. One over that waits until the address has room.

**Send Test Email** sends either email, about a made-up last order, to the address you type. One test every five minutes.

### The figures and the buyers

| | |
| - | - |
| **Won Back Revenue** | Paid orders placed within 14 days of a Win-Back email to their buyer, and the change against the period before. |
| **Subscribed Buyers** | Buyers who want your emails, and the share of the period's paid orders that showed the box whose buyer ticked it. |
| **Came Back** | Of the buyers emailed in the period, the share who ordered again. |
| **Emails Sent** | Win-Back emails sent, how many buyers clicked the button, and how many unsubscribed. |

A won back order is a paid order like any other, already in your revenue, and its timeline says which email won it back.

The list under the figures is every buyer Win-Back is following: a buyer shows a week before their first email is due, as **Due Soon** with when. Then **First Email Sent**, **Second Email Sent**, **Won Back**, **Unsubscribed**, or **Stopped**, with why. Search by address, and **Show** narrows it, to **Clicked** among others. A click is counted as Cart Recovery counts one: close, but not exact.

## Your server

[Webhook](/guides/webhooks.md) events: `subscriber.subscribed` when a buyer who ticked the box pays, `subscriber.unsubscribed`, `winback.email_sent` and `winback.won_back`. See [Webhook events](/api-reference/webhook-events.md).

With an [API key](/guides/api-keys.md), your server can read and change Win-Back and asking at checkout, list Win-Back's buyers and read one, and list, export and unsubscribe subscribers. Reading needs **Read Email Marketing** and changing **Change Email Marketing**. **Send Test Email** is the dashboard's. See [Email Marketing](/api-reference/email-marketing/get-win-back.md) in the API reference.
