# Set up Mollie

> Where your Mollie API key is

Mollie takes cards and the local methods of your buyers' countries, on its own page.

## In Mollie

1. In your Mollie dashboard, open **Developers**, then **API keys**. Only the Admin and Developer roles can open it.
2. Copy your live API key. It starts with `live_`. A key that starts with `test_` completes and delivers orders with no money moving.
3. Switch on at least one payment method in your Mollie dashboard's payment methods settings. Cards, Klarna and some others need Mollie to verify you first, and a live key works once Mollie has approved your website profile.

There is nothing else to set up in Mollie: each payment tells Mollie where to report.

## In Shoply

1. In your Shoply dashboard, open **Settings**, then **Payment Methods**.
2. Under **Add a Payment Method**, find **Mollie** and press **Connect**.
3. Paste the key into **API Key**.
4. Press **Test Connection** to try what you pasted, then **Connect App**.

Saving refuses a key Mollie does not know, and a profile with no payment method switched on. **Test Connection** says how many are on.

If you sell [subscriptions](/guides/subscriptions.md), a subscription's first payment is made for a customer in your Mollie account, and Mollie's page then offers only the ways to pay that can be charged again. Once it is paid, each renewal is charged to the same card or account on its day. A renewal by direct debit, which iDEAL, Bancontact and the like set up, needs **SEPA Direct Debit** switched on in your Mollie profile.

How Mollie works once it is connected, at the checkout and on an order, is in [Payment methods](/guides/payment-methods.md#mollie).
