# Coupons and sales

> Discount codes a buyer types, and sales that lower prices for a stretch of time

## Coupons

A coupon is a code a buyer types at checkout, under **Add Coupon** beneath the order, on the checkout and in an embed alike. Find them under **Catalogue**, then **Coupons & Sales**, on its **Coupons** tab.

| | |

| **Discount** | A percent of the order, or an amount in the store's currency. |
| **Limits** | How many orders may use it, the smallest order it works on, and a day it stops working. Each is optional. |
| **Products** | Every product, or only the ones you pick: a whole product, or one variant of it. |
| **Who Can Use It** | Everyone, or only the customers wearing one [tag](/guides/customers-and-balance.md#tags): VIP or one of your own. |

Coupons are filed in categories of your own. A store holds up to 1,000 coupons.

### A coupon for one tag

A coupon set to one tag works only for a buyer whose email wears it. The checkout asks when the code is applied, and again when they pay. Anybody else is told "This code isn't for this email address." On your store's own cart, before the checkout knows who is buying, the code looks as it would for anyone, and the checkout decides.

A coupon for a tag nobody can wear works for nobody: VIP while it is switched off, or one of your tags after you delete it. Its row in the list shows the tag in red, and the coupon's dialog says so. The coupon pop-up can't hand one out, since it shows its code to every visitor.

### The coupon pop-up

The storefront can offer visitors a coupon in a pop-up: after a few seconds on the page, or when they look like leaving. Set it up under **Catalogue**, then **Coupons & Sales**, on its **Coupon Pop-up** tab. It needs a coupon buyers can use today.

### A reward for a first order

A store can send a buyer a code of their own after their first order. Those codes are made by the store and kept in a category called First Timer. The codes [Cart Recovery](/guides/cart-recovery.md) sends a buyer who left a checkout are kept the same way, in a category called Cart Recovery. Neither category can be renamed or picked for a coupon you write, and their codes do not count toward your store's coupons.

## Sales

A sale takes a discount off products for a stretch of time. Prices on the storefront are struck through, with the sale price beside them and a countdown across the top. Find them under **Catalogue**, then **Coupons & Sales**, on its **Sales** tab, where **Add Sale** makes one.

| | |
| - | - |
| **Discount** | A percent of each price, or an amount off it. |
| **Products** | Every product, or the ones you pick. |
| **From and until** | A start and an end. A sale that has ended is over by itself. |
| **Coupons during the sale** | Whether a coupon counts only the items that are not on sale, works on sale items too, or does not work at all while the sale runs. You can make exceptions for particular coupons or coupon categories. |

A store holds up to 30 sales.

## An affiliate's discount

A link from one of your [affiliates](/guides/affiliates.md) can take something off for the buyer too. That discount and a coupon both apply: the affiliate's is taken off what the coupon left.
